Monte Hawley's Life and Career
Early Days and Stage Work
Monte Hawley started his acting journey with a famous group called the Lafayette Players. This was a very important theater company that gave Black actors many chances to perform. He learned a lot about acting from Richard Berry Harrison, who was a respected teacher and actor.
After his early training, Monte Hawley moved to New York City. There, he acted in many plays on Broadway, which is a famous area in New York known for its big theater shows. Being on Broadway meant he was performing at the highest level of live theater.
Moving to the Movies
Later, Monte Hawley moved to Hollywood, California. This is where many movies are made. He started acting in films, including one of the very first movies produced by Oscar Micheaux, a pioneering Black filmmaker.
Monte Hawley also worked as an actor and stage manager for a play called Anna Lucasta. This play was part of a traveling production, which means the actors and crew moved from city to city to perform the show for different audiences. The Philadelphia Tribune, a newspaper, said that Hawley was one of the most important Black actors in both theater and movies.
Monte Hawley passed away on November 30, 1950, in New York City.
