Monte Lirio: A Place in Panama
Monte Lirio is a part of Panama with a changing population. In 1990, there were 4,807 people living there. By 2000, the population grew to 6,652 people. However, by 2010, the number went down to 2,771 people.
Power from Water: Hydroelectric Projects
The government of Panama has approved many projects to create electricity from water. These are called hydroelectric projects. Many of these projects are happening on the Río Viejo Chiriquí (Old Chiriquí River).
How Water Makes Electricity
Up to 90% of the water in the river's area can be used to make electricity. This power can be used in Panama or sold to other countries.
Caring for the Environment
When big projects like these are built, it's important to study their effects on nature. For the Pando and Monte Lirio hydroelectric projects, a study looked at possible environmental impacts.
The study found that there might be some changes to the natural homes of animals and plants. This could happen because there might be less erosion, which changes the land. Also, the way the river flows could change, which might affect the river's natural balance.
Another possible impact is that more water might be used. This could happen if more people visit the area for ecotourism or rafting activities. Ecotourism means traveling to natural areas in a way that helps protect the environment.
