Monterreal Castle: A Historic Fortress in Baiona
A Long History of Monterreal Castle
The story of Monterreal Castle began a very long time ago, around the 12th century. But it wasn't finished quickly! People kept building and adding to it until the 16th century. This means many different people and styles contributed to its look over hundreds of years.
Even before the castle we see today, this spot was important. Records show that the famous Roman leader Julius Caesar conquered Baiona way back in the year 60. Later, other groups like the Visigoths and Muslims also lived here. Each group left their mark on the land. The name "Monterreal" was given to the castle by the Catholic Monarchs of Spain, Ferdinand and Isabella.
What Makes Monterreal Castle Special?
Monterreal Castle was built to protect the town of Baiona from invaders. It has strong walls and several impressive towers. Three of the castle's towers are still standing today.
Important Towers and Defenses
- The Reloj Tower (Clock Tower) is one of the preserved towers.
- The Tenaza Tower has a unique seven-sided base, making it stand out.
- The Príncipe Tower (Prince's Tower) is another important part of the castle's defenses.
The castle is also protected by the Puerta del Sol (Sun Gate). This entrance has a ramp and a lifting bridge, which would have made it very hard for enemies to get inside. These features show how clever people were at building defenses long ago.
Monterreal Castle Today: A Tourist Destination
Today, Monterreal Castle is a peaceful and beautiful place. It's no longer used for defense. Instead, it has been turned into a luxury hotel, part of the Paradores chain in Spain.
