How Montevallo Began

The community of Montevallo was first planned out and marked on a map in the 1850s. This process is called "platting." The very first location of the town was actually about one and a half miles northwest of where Montevallo is today.

The Civil War's Impact

During the American Civil War (1861-1865), many places in Missouri, including Montevallo, faced difficult times. The community was badly damaged during the war. After the fighting ended, the people of Montevallo decided to move the entire town to a new spot. This new location is where Montevallo stands today. The original town site is now known as "Old Montevallo."

Mail and Meaning

A post office was opened in Montevallo in 1858. This was an important service that helped people send and receive mail for many years. The post office stayed open for over a century before it was finally closed in 1968. The name "Montevallo" itself has a special meaning. It comes from Italian words that mean the hill in the valley. This name perfectly describes the area's landscape.
