Montezuma's Early History
First Settlers and Shops
The area that we now call Montezuma began to be settled around 1820. Some of the very first people to live there were Joseph Johnson, Wesley Burkhead, and Nehemiah Burkhead. They helped start the community. The first shop in Montezuma was owned by a person named J. R. Wamble.
The Railroad's Path
In the 1850s and 1860s, railroads were very important for travel and moving goods across the country. When a railroad was being planned for West Tennessee, the people of Montezuma decided they did not want it to go through their community. Because of this, the railroad was built through a nearby place called Henderson instead. Over time, Henderson grew to be a much bigger community than Montezuma.
Choosing the County Seat
Montezuma was once part of McNairy County. Later, Chester County was formed as a new county. Both Montezuma and Henderson were suggested as the "County Seat" for this new county. The County Seat is the main town where the county government offices are located. However, when it came time to choose, Henderson was picked by a large number of votes.
Post Office Changes
In July 1975, the Montezuma Post Office closed down. Its services were then combined with the Post Office in Henderson.
