Montfort, Texas facts for kids

Kids Encyclopedia Facts

Montfort was once a very small settlement, almost like a tiny village, in northeastern Navarro County, Texas. It was located about 11 miles (18 km) northeast of Corsicana, Texas. You could find it near Farm to Market Road 636, just east of Interstate 45.

A Look Back: Montfort's History

Montfort was never a very big place. It was a small community that slowly faded away over time.

How Montfort Started

The community of Montfort began in the late 1890s. It was named after James Theodoric Montfort. He and his brothers owned a large amount of land, about 1,800 acres (7.3 square kilometers), in the area.

Life in the Early Days

From 1896 to 1904, Montfort even had its own post office. The community was small, but it had a few important businesses. There was a cotton gin, which was a machine that separated cotton fibers from their seeds. There was also a blacksmith shop, where people could get metal items made or repaired. A general store sold many different kinds of goods to the residents.

The Town Begins to Shrink

By the mid-1930s, Montfort had become even smaller. There were only a couple of stores left, a school, and just a few houses. In 1936, only fifteen people lived in Montfort.

After World War II, the remaining stores in Montfort closed down. The local school also joined with the school in Roane. This process is called consolidation, meaning two schools became one. By the mid-1960s, most of Montfort was gone. Only a few scattered houses remained where the community once stood.
