Montfort Hall is a special old house in Raleigh, North Carolina. It is located in the Boylan Heights neighborhood. This house is a registered historic landmark. This means it is an important building from the past.
Montfort Hall was built in 1858. It is one of the few large homes in Raleigh that survived the American Civil War. The house shows off a style called Italianate architecture. Inside, the main part of the house is a round room called a rotunda. This room has four tall Corinthian columns. A beautiful stained glass window on the roof lets light into the rotunda.
Montfort Hall was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1978. It is also a Raleigh Historic Landmark. Today, this historic building is being turned into a small, fancy hotel with 10 rooms.
History of Montfort Hall
Montfort Hall was built for a man named William Montfort Boylan. People called him “Buck.” He was the youngest son of a very rich businessman in Raleigh, William Boylan. The Boylan family owned a large farm called Wakefield Plantation. They also owned other farms in different counties. This made William Boylan one of the richest people in North Carolina.
In 1855, William Boylan gave his son, William Montfort Boylan, about 100 acres (0.40 km2) of land from the Wakefield Plantation. William Montfort Boylan decided to build his home there.
Designing Montfort Hall
William Montfort Boylan chose an architect named William Percival to design his new home in 1858. William Percival was a well-known architect. He also worked on the North Carolina State Capitol building. He designed dorms at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill.
William Montfort Boylan lived in the house until he passed away in 1899. A few years later, in 1907, the land around Montfort Hall was sold. It was divided into smaller lots to create a new neighborhood. This new area became known as Boylan Heights. It was one of Raleigh's first neighborhoods that was carefully planned out.
Since then, Montfort Hall has had many different owners. But the house still looks much like it did when it was first built. It keeps its original charm and history.
Montfort Hall as a Hotel
In June 2018, Jeff and Sarah Shepherd bought Montfort Hall. They had help from Keith and Natalia Luckyanova. The Luckyanovas are famous for starting Imangi Studios, which made the game Temple Run.
The new owners are working to change Montfort Hall into a special hotel. It will have 10 unique rooms for guests. This project will help keep the historic building alive for many more years.
