Built way back in 1803, it's one of the oldest buildings you'll find there. For many years, it was a super important spot where people gathered for social events and town meetings. What the Montgomery House Looks Like
The Montgomery House is a two-and-a-half-story building made of brick. It has a strong stone foundation and a roof with two pointed ends, called gables. You can find it just west of the town's small, triangle-shaped park, on the south side of North Main Street (which is also Vermont Route 118).
Front of the Building
The front of the house looks like two separate sections, each with three window bays. There are doors in the middle of both the ground floor and the second floor. The upstairs doors open onto the roof of a porch that stretches across the middle of the building. The sides of the roof, called gable ends, are made of wood and covered with horizontal boards called clapboards. You'll also see small square windows near the very top of these gable ends.
Inside the House
When you go inside, you can still see many original parts of the building. For example, the wooden floors are held together with old-fashioned cut nails. The way the rooms are set up on the upper floor also shows how houses were designed in the 1800s. It's like stepping back in time!
History of the Montgomery House
The Montgomery House was built in 1803. It sits along the path of an old military road called the Bayley Hazen Military Road. This road was important during the American Revolutionary War. The house is the oldest known building in Montgomery.
A Community Hub
For many years, this house was the main place for people to meet and gather. The town didn't have any other public buildings back then. So, church services and town meetings were held right here until the mid-1800s. It was truly the heart of the community!
From Inn to Hotel
Later in the 1800s, more people started traveling and visiting the area. The Montgomery House then became more like a hotel, offering rooms for travelers. It has continued to serve as a place for visitors to stay off and on throughout the 1900s.
