A Look Back: Montserrat's History
Montserrat has an interesting past, including a name change!
How Montserrat Got Its Start
Montserrat wasn't always called Montserrat. Its first name was "Carbon Hill." This community was first planned out, or platted, in 1867 under that name.
Moving the Town and the Railroad
Just a few years later, in 1870, the entire town site was moved and planned again. This happened because a railroad line was being built and extended to that area. Having the railroad nearby was very important for communities back then, as it helped with travel and moving goods.
The Post Office Years
The name "Montserrat" officially came into use when a post office opened there in 1872. This post office served the community for many years, helping people send and receive mail. It stayed open for over 80 years before finally closing its doors in 1954.
