Monty Berman's Early Work in Film
Monty Berman started his career in movies when he was 17 years old. He began as a camera assistant at Twickenham Film Studios. This job involved helping the main camera operator.
Becoming a Camera Operator
By 1934, Monty became a full camera operator. He worked for big companies like Associated British Picture Corporation and later for Ealing Studios, which was famous for making comedies.
Working During World War II
During World War II, Monty Berman was able to continue his camera work. He joined an army film unit. There, he met Robert S. Baker, and they became good friends and business partners for life.
Starting Tempean Films
In 1948, Monty Berman and Robert S. Baker started their own company called Tempean Films. This company made over 30 B-movies during the 1950s. B-movies were usually shorter, lower-budget films.
Bringing The Saint to TV
In 1962, Berman and Baker got the rights to make a TV show based on the books The Saint by Leslie Charteris. They first tried to sell the idea to Associated-Rediffusion, a large TV company in Britain.
When that didn't work, Berman went to Lew Grade's ITC. ITC was connected to another company called ATV. This connection helped The Saint become very popular not only in Britain but also in other countries around the world.
Monty Berman's TV Shows with Dennis Spooner
After The Saint, Monty Berman made more TV shows for ITC. He started with a show called The Baron. This led him to work closely with Dennis Spooner, who was one of the writers for The Baron. They also worked with Ray Austin, a writer and director.
Creating Popular TV Series
By 1967, Berman, Spooner, and Austin had their own production company. They created several popular TV shows that many people enjoyed:
- The Champions
- Department S
- Jason King (a spin-off show from Department S)
- Randall and Hopkirk (Deceased)
- The Adventurer
After finishing his work on The Adventurer, Monty Berman decided to retire from making TV shows.
