Moon, South Dakota facts for kids
Moon was once a small town in Pennington County, located in the U.S. state of South Dakota. Today, it is considered an extinct town, which means it no longer exists as an active community. It's often called a "ghost town" because no one lives there anymore.
History
The town of Moon was started in 1910 by a person named T. J. Sherwood. He planned out the town. It was named after Jack Moon, who was the very first person to live there.
A post office was opened in Moon in 1911. Having a post office was a big deal for a small town because it meant people could send and receive mail, connecting them to the outside world. This post office stayed open for many years until it finally closed in 1953. After the post office closed, the town slowly faded away.
