The Story of Harry T. Moore and the Center
Who Was Harry T. Moore?
Harry T. Moore was a dedicated teacher and a strong leader in the fight for civil rights. He worked hard to make things fair for everyone in Florida. He started the very first local group of the NAACP (National Association for the Advancement of Colored People) in Brevard County. This group worked to ensure equal rights for African Americans.
Fighting for Fair Pay
In 1938, Harry T. Moore took a big step. He sued the school district because black teachers were not paid the same as white teachers. This case, called Gilbert v. Board of Public Instruction of Brevard County, even went to the highest court in Florida, the Florida Supreme Court. Sadly, the court did not rule in favor of the teachers at that time. However, Moore's actions were very important in the larger fight for equal pay.
A Tragic Event and Lasting Legacy
On December 25, 1951, a very sad event happened. Harry T. Moore and his wife, Harriette V. Moore, were killed when a bomb exploded under their house. They are remembered as some of the first civil rights activists who lost their lives during the movement for equal rights. Their sacrifice helped bring attention to the serious issues people faced.
Creating a Place to Remember
In 1994, Brevard County bought the land where the Moore family's house once stood. A special group was formed to raise money for a memorial. In 2004, the cultural center was officially opened. This center has a museum that tells the story of the Moores and a building that looks like their original home.
