The Moore Memorial Park and Cultural Center is an important historical place in Mims, Florida. It was once the home of Harry T. Moore, a brave leader in the fight for civil rights. Today, this special site has a museum, a place for meetings, and a peaceful park.

History of the Moore Center

Who Were Harry and Harriette Moore?

Harry T. Moore was a teacher and a strong leader in the civil rights movement. He worked hard to make things fair for everyone in Florida. He started the first local group of the NAACP (National Association for the Advancement of Colored People) in Brevard County. This group worked to protect the rights of African Americans.

In 1938, Mr. Moore took legal action against the school district. He wanted Black teachers to be paid the same as white teachers. This case, called Gilbert v. Board of Public Instruction of Brevard County, went all the way to the Florida Supreme Court. Even though the court did not rule in his favor then, his actions helped pave the way for future changes.

A Tragic Event

On December 25, 1951, a very sad event happened. A bomb was placed under the Moores' house. Both Harry T. Moore and his wife, Harriette V. Moore, were killed. They are believed to be the first civil rights activists to be killed during the modern civil rights movement. Their sacrifice showed the dangers faced by those fighting for equality.

Creating the Memorial Park

In 1994, Brevard County bought the land where the Moores' home once stood. A special group was formed to collect money for a memorial site. In 2004, the cultural center was officially opened.

The center includes a museum where you can learn about the Moores' lives. There is also a copy of their original home. The grounds also feature a large, beautiful park. This park has walking paths, a calm reflecting pool, a fountain, and a gazebo.

The Harry T. & Harriette V. Moore Memorial Park & Museum is now an official landmark. It is part of the United States Civil Rights Trail, which highlights important places in the fight for civil rights.
