Moray, Kansas facts for kids

Kids Encyclopedia Facts

Moray is a small place in Doniphan County, Kansas, United States. It's called an "unincorporated community" because it doesn't have its own local government like a city or town. Instead, it's part of the larger Doniphan County.

History

Moray started as a small settlement way back in 1857. This was a time when many people were moving west to find new homes and build communities.

Many of the first people who settled in Moray came from Norway. They helped build the community from the ground up, bringing their traditions and skills to the new area.

The Post Office

A very important part of any early community was its post office. The first post office in Moray was set up in 1871. It was first called "East Norway," showing the influence of the Norwegian settlers.

Later, in December 1894, its name changed to "Moray." The post office had a few changes over the years. It closed for a short time in August 1914 but opened again in May 1915. Finally, it closed for good in April 1938. This often happened as towns grew or changed, and people used other ways to send mail.
