The Morgan Mansion is a special old house in Wellston, Ohio, United States. It was built in 1905 and used to be the home of T.J. Morgan, a very important businessman in Jackson County, Ohio. A Home for a Coal King
The Morgan Mansion was built for T.J. Morgan, a very successful person in Wellston. He started his business in 1884. He worked with iron and coal, which were big industries in Ohio at that time.
Who Was T.J. Morgan?
T.J. Morgan became very wealthy from his company, the Wellston Coal and Iron Company. By 1905, he was successful enough to build a grand home. He hired a famous architect named Wilbur Mills from Columbus, Ohio, to design it.
Designing a Unique Home
Wilbur Mills designed the mansion using brick walls and a strong stone foundation. The roof was made of asphalt, and the house also had stone and iron details. It's a two-and-a-half-story building.
The mansion doesn't follow just one building style. It mixes two different styles: Jacobethan and Spanish Mission Revival. This mix makes the Morgan Mansion very special. In fact, it's considered the most important building in Wellston for its architecture. Sadly, T.J. Morgan passed away just three years after his beautiful home was finished.
From Mansion to City Hall
About 30 years after the Morgan Mansion was built, the city of Wellston bought it. They decided to turn the mansion into their city hall. This means it became the main building for the city's government.
