Joseph Clutts: A Key Figure
Joseph Clutts was born in 1861. He moved to Wellston in 1882. He quickly became one of the most important people in the region.
- He bought local blast furnaces, which are huge ovens used to make iron.
- He also bought a share in the Spring Valley Iron Company.
- He got large areas of forest land. These trees were used as fuel for his furnaces.
In 1896, Joseph Clutts helped start the Wellston Iron and Steel Company. This company ran two more blast furnaces. He later bought out his business partners in 1898.
The Clutts House: A Special Home
Joseph Clutts had this house built in 1902. It is two-and-a-half stories tall. The house has walls made of light brown brick. Its roof is covered with ceramic tiles.
The Clutts House doesn't have one specific architectural style. However, its large size and special details make it stand out. Most other houses in Wellston, even those built around the same time, were much smaller. They were built for regular workers, not for important business owners like Clutts.
From Home to Office: Its History
After Joseph Clutts passed away in 1927, his home became known as the "Reese Building." It stopped being a family home. Today, it is used as law offices by the firm Oths, Heiser, and Miller.
Even though it's no longer a home, the building still looks very much like it did when it was first built. Most of its original decorations and parts are still there.
In 1980, the Clutts House was added to the National Register of Historic Places. This is a special list of buildings, sites, and objects that are important in American history. It was listed because of its connection to Joseph Clutts and its unique, well-preserved architecture.
The Clutts House is one of three buildings in Wellston on this important list. The other two are the Morgan Mansion and the Harvey Wells House.
