Who Was George Morikami?
The park is named after a very kind man, George Morikami. He was a Japanese immigrant who came to Florida. An immigrant is someone who moves from one country to live in another. George Morikami loved this area. He wanted to make sure the land would be used for something good. So, he generously donated it to Palm Beach County. This gift allowed for the creation of the beautiful park we see today.
What Can You Do at Morikami Park?
Morikami Park offers many exciting things to do. The main attraction is the Morikami Museum and Japanese Gardens. Here, you can learn about Japanese culture and history. You can also explore beautiful gardens designed in traditional Japanese styles. These gardens are peaceful and perfect for a walk.
Besides the museum and gardens, the park has other great features. There are special areas set up for picnics. You can bring your lunch and enjoy it outdoors with friends or family. The park also has playgrounds where younger visitors can have fun.
What About the Orchids?
For a while, the American Orchid Society Visitor Center and Botanical Garden was also located in Morikami Park. This center had a large collection of beautiful orchids. Orchids are a type of colorful flower. However, in 2011, the orchid collection was moved. It went to the Fairchild Tropical Botanic Garden. The visitor center building was then sold. So, while you won't find the orchids there anymore, the park still offers plenty to see and do!
