Morley Old Hall: A Historic Home

Building a Grand House

Morley Old Hall was built around the year 1600. A famous architect named John Sedley designed it. He even worked for King Henry VII! The house has a special U-shape when you look at it from above. It has two main floors, plus two more floors hidden in the attic. The whole house is made of strong brick and has plain-tiled roofs. What makes it extra special is that it's completely surrounded by a moat filled with water.

Famous People Who Lived Here

Over the years, some interesting people have owned Morley Old Hall. One famous owner was Field Marshal Sir Edmund Ironside. A Field Marshal is a very high-ranking army officer. Sir Edmund was in charge of the Home Forces during World War II. This meant he was responsible for defending Britain during the war.

Later, in the 1970s, the house belonged to Janet Shand Kydd. She was the first wife of Peter Shand Kydd. Peter was the stepfather of Princess Diana, who was a very well-known princess.

Bringing the Hall Back to Life

Before 2001, Morley Old Hall was in a very bad state. It was almost falling apart, and one of its main walls had even collapsed into the moat. But then, new owners came along!

In May 2009, the house was put up for sale for about £2.65 million. The new owners, Richard and Alison Warden, spent a lot of money and time fixing it up. They did about £1 million worth of renovation work to make it beautiful again. After all that hard work, the house was put up for sale again in April 2012 for £3 million.
