Morné Steyn (born July 11, 1984) is a famous South African rugby union player. He used to play as a fly-half for the Bulls team. He also played for the South Africa national team, known as the Springboks. He stopped playing international rugby in October 2021.
Morné has won many important rugby competitions. These include the Under-21 World Cup and three Super Rugby titles. He is also the only player to win two British and Irish Lions series while playing for the home team.
Morné Steyn's Rugby Journey
Morné Steyn played for the Bulls team. They won the Super Rugby competition three times: in 2007, 2009, and 2010. Morné scored the most points in the league in both 2009 and 2010. In a 2009 semi-final game against the Crusaders, he kicked four drop goals. This was a record for one game!
From 2013 to 2020, Morné played rugby in France. He joined the Stade Français team in the Top 14 league. He played his first game for them on August 30, 2013. In that game, his team won 38–3 against Biarritz. He came onto the field in the 60th minute and scored four points.
Playing for South Africa
In early 2009, the South Africa coach, Peter de Villiers, preferred another player for the number 10 jersey. However, Morné Steyn was playing very well in the Super 14 tournament.
During the second Test of the 2009 British & Irish Lions tour to South Africa, Morné was on the bench. The other player's kicking was not going well. Morné came into the game and quickly kicked two conversions and two penalties. One of these penalties was from 53 metres away! This kick happened in the last few minutes of the game. It helped the Springboks win the match and the series in a very exciting way.
On August 1, 2009, South Africa beat New Zealand 31–19. This was a 2009 Tri Nations Series match in Durban. It was only Morné's fifth game for South Africa and his second time starting. He scored all 31 points for the Springboks! He kicked 8 penalty kicks and even scored his own try. This broke several records. It was the most points scored by one player in a Tri Nations match.
Morné Steyn scored the most points of any player at the 2011 Rugby World Cup. He scored a total of 62 points in that tournament.
In August 2021, Morné had not played for South Africa since 2016. But he was chosen to be a substitute for the final test against the British & Irish Lions. He replaced Handré Pollard in the second half. Just like in 2009, he kicked two important penalties late in the game. These kicks helped South Africa win the game and the series.
