Moroni is an important figure in the Book of Mormon, a sacred book for members of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. He was the last prophet and leader of a group of ancient people called the Nephites. Moroni finished writing the Book of Mormon and then buried the golden plates it was written on.
Years later, Mormons believe Moroni appeared as an angel to a young man named Joseph Smith. Moroni showed Joseph where the golden plates were hidden. Joseph then translated these plates into what we know today as the Book of Mormon.

Who Was Moroni?
Moroni lived a very long time ago, around 400 AD. He was a prophet and a general among his people, the Nephites. His father, Mormon, was also a great prophet and leader. Mormon was the main person who put together the records that became the Book of Mormon.
Moroni's Final Work
After his father, Mormon, was killed in a big battle, Moroni was left alone. He continued to write on the golden plates, adding his own experiences and teachings. He also included some important messages from his father. Moroni knew that his people would soon be completely destroyed. He finished the record and then carefully buried the golden plates in a hill. He did this to protect them until a future time when they would be found.
The Angel Moroni
Many years later, in 1823, Moroni appeared as an angel to Joseph Smith. Joseph was a young man living in New York, and he was looking for truth.
Moroni and Joseph Smith
The angel Moroni visited Joseph Smith several times. He taught Joseph about the ancient people who wrote the Book of Mormon. Moroni also told Joseph about the golden plates and where they were hidden. He guided Joseph to the hill where the plates were buried. Eventually, Joseph was given the plates and, with God's help, translated them into the Book of Mormon.
A Symbol of Faith
Today, you can often see a golden statue of the angel Moroni on top of temples belonging to The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. This statue usually shows Moroni holding a trumpet to his lips, as if announcing something important. It is a symbol of the message of the Book of Mormon being shared with the world. It also reminds people of Moroni's important role in bringing forth this sacred book.
