The Morrin Centre is a special place in the Old Quebec area of Quebec City, Quebec, Canada. It helps people learn about the history and culture of English-speaking people in Quebec. The centre has a private English library, cool old rooms for events, and ways to learn about history. The English library has been here since 1868. It keeps many old books and papers, including copies of the society's own journal. These papers have old articles about science, history, and stories. They also have copies of even older documents found in archives around the world. To use these special materials, you need to be a member of the library.
History of the Morrin Centre
The Morrin Centre is in an old prison building. This building is so important that it's called a National Historic Site of Canada.
This historic place has been used for four different things over time:
- It was a military fort called the Royal Redoubt from 1712 to 1808.
- Then, it became the Quebec City Common Gaol (a prison) from 1812 to 1867.
- After that, it was home to Morrin College from 1868 until about 1902.
- Since 1868, the Literary and Historical Society of Quebec has been located here.
In 2004, the Literary and Historical Society of Quebec became the official users of this historic building. They got it through a special long-term agreement.
In the last ten years, the Society has expanded its goals. The building was completely updated and changed into the Morrin Centre. Now, it's not just a library. It's also Quebec City’s main English-language cultural centre. It's a place where you can learn a lot about history.
