The Pardee-Morris House is a special old building located at 325 Lighthouse Road in New Haven, Connecticut. It is also known as the John Morris House. This house is now a historic house museum, which means you can visit it to learn about history.

It was likely built a very long time ago, in the late 1600s. This makes it one of the oldest buildings still standing in New Haven. It's a great example of early American colonial architecture. The house was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1972 because of its importance. Today, the New Haven Museum and Historical Society takes care of it. They open it during certain times of the year for fun events, classes, and tours.

What is the Pardee-Morris House?

The Pardee-Morris House is found in an area of New Haven called Morris Cove. This is on the east side of the New Haven Harbor. You can find it at the corner of Lighthouse Road and Morris Avenue.

Its Unique Look

This house is quite large, with two and a half stories. It is made of wood, with a special outer layer called clapboard. The ends of the house have strong stone walls and chimneys. Some of the stone was put together with very old mortar that even has shells mixed into it!

The front of the house has seven sections, with windows placed evenly around the main door. A modern roof-like cover protects the entrance. This design shows how homes were built a long time ago.

A Glimpse into History

The oldest parts of the Pardee-Morris House are thought to be from the late 1600s. This was probably when Thomas Morris, who first owned land in this area, or one of his sons lived there.

A House Through Time

During the American Revolutionary War, in 1779, British soldiers attacked New Haven. The Pardee-Morris House was partly burned during this attack. Even after this, the house stayed with the Morris family for a very long time, until 1915.

In 1915, a man named William Pardee bought the house. He only lived there for a short time. When he passed away a few years later, he left the house to the historical society. He also left money to help them take care of it. This is why we can still visit and learn from this amazing old house today!
