A very famous family from Normandy, called "d'O," once lived here. This family became well-known during the First Crusade, which was a long time ago. One important member was the Marquis d'O, who passed away in 1594. He was a very important person in the government, serving as the finance minister for Henry III of France. This meant he managed the country's money. He was also a favorite of the king.

On January 1, 2019, another nearby village, Saint-Hilaire-la-Gérard, joined with Mortrée to become one larger community.

Historic Places in Mortrée

Mortrée is home to some interesting old buildings. These include two churches: one is called "Saints-Pierre-et-Paul" (which means Saints Peter and Paul) and the other is named "Méhéran."

The Chateau d'Ô

One of the most famous buildings in Mortrée is the Chateau d'Ô. This grand castle is made up of two main parts that are connected by a long hallway, or gallery.

The entrance building of the chateau was built in the early 1500s. It shows a special style called "Gothic flamboyant." This style is known for its fancy and flame-like decorations. What makes this part of the castle very special is how it mixes stones and bricks in its small towers. You can also see beautiful sculptures on the front of the entrance.

The gallery that connects the two parts of the chateau was built around the same time. Its design was inspired by Italian architecture. The western part of the castle was finished later, in the 1600s.
