The Building's History
The original Mosby Tavern was a small house. Benjamin Mosby built it in 1740. It had only one room at first. Over many years, the house grew much larger.
How the House Grew
By the early 1800s, Benjamin's grandson, Littleberry Mosby Jr., owned the house. At that time, it was a one-story building. It had a "hall-parlor plan," meaning it had two main rooms side-by-side. Insurance papers from that time show it was about 34 feet by 28 feet.
The house became much bigger between 1849 and 1859. This is when most of the main additions were likely made. It was expanded into a two-story building. It also gained a central hallway and single-story sections on the sides.
Around 1950, another two-story part was added to the back. A porch was built at the rear in 1988. These changes brought the house to its current size and look.
