The City Hall in Moscow, Idaho, is a very old and important building. It was built in 1911. This building has red bricks and fancy ivory trim. Its style is called Late Victorian and Eclectic architecture.

For many years, this building was known as the Moscow Post Office and Courthouse. It was also called the Moscow Federal Building.

A Look at Moscow's Historic City Hall

Early Days: A Federal Building

When it was first built, this building was used by the U.S. government. It worked as a post office, where people sent and received mail. It was also a courthouse for the U.S. District Court in Idaho. This means important legal cases were decided here.

In 1973, the building was added to the National Register of Historic Places. This list includes special places that are important to American history. A year later, in 1974, the federal offices moved to a new building. So, the old building became empty.

New Life for a Historic Building

Two years later, in 1976, the city of Moscow bought the building. They bought it from the General Services Administration, which manages government property. The city paid $70,000 for it. Half of this money came from the state historical society. At that time, just the land was worth $100,000!

In 1979, people thought about using the building as a library, but that idea didn't happen. Instead, in the early 1980s, it became a community center. It was a place where people could gather for different activities.

Moscow's City Hall Today

Later, in 1986, there was a plan to fix up the building. This plan needed money from a "bond issue," which is like a loan from the public. But the plan was not approved by the voters.

Even so, in the 1990s, the building found its most important role yet. It became the official city hall for Moscow. This means it's where the city government works and makes decisions for the community.
