What Makes This Historic House Special?
The Moses Brace–Uriah Cadwell House is located in northern West Hartford. You can find it on the south side of Flagg Road. It's just west of where Flagg Road meets Albany Avenue.
Looking at the House's Design
This house is made of wood and has two and a half stories. It is four bays wide, which means it has four main sections across its front. A very large chimney sits right in the middle of the house. The roof has a classic triangular shape, called a gabled roof.
The main front door is not in the very center. It is in the second section from the right. The doorway has decorative flat columns on each side, called pilasters. Above the door is a simple flat band, known as an entablature.
Unique Features of the House
This house is quite deep for a building from its time period. It also has roof edges that stick out less than usual. The corners of the house are finished with thin, decorative pilasters. A garage built in the 1900s is connected to the right side of the house by a small walkway.
Who Lived in This Historic Home?
The first house in this area was built in 1733 by Ebenezer Steele. The land where the Moses Brace–Uriah Cadwell House now stands was part of Steele's property. This particular house was built in 1766.
Moses Brace bought the property in 1790. Later, Uriah Cadwell bought this house in 1799. Cadwell also bought the original Steele house in 1811 and replaced it. It seems Cadwell lived in the other house while this one was being updated between 1811 and 1832.
