Kids Encyclopedia Facts

Mosha Michael (born around 1948 – died November 17, 2009) was a talented filmmaker from Canada. He is often remembered as one of the very first Inuk (which means an Inuit person) filmmakers in Canada. He created three short films for the National Film Board of Canada during the 1970s.

Early Life and Challenges

Mosha Michael grew up in Iqaluit, a city in Nunavut, Canada. When he was a child, he became sick with a serious illness called tuberculosis. Because of this, he had to travel far from home to a special clinic in Hamilton, Ontario, for a year to get treatment.

He also had to go to a residential school in Churchill, Manitoba. These schools were often difficult places for Indigenous children.

His Films

Mosha Michael made three important short films that showed parts of Inuit life and culture. He worked with the National Film Board of Canada, which helps create and share Canadian stories. His films were:

  • Natsik Hunting
  • The Hunters (Asivaqtiin)
  • Whale Hunting (Qilaluganiatut)

These films helped share stories from the North with people across Canada and beyond.

Later Life and Legacy

Later in his life, Mosha Michael faced personal challenges. He passed away on November 17, 2009, in Toronto, after having surgery at St. Michael's Hospital. His work as a filmmaker remains an important part of Canadian and Inuit film history.
