Early Life and Education
Moshe Kahlon was born in Hadera, Israel. He was one of seven children. His parents were Libyan Jewish immigrants from Tripoli. His father worked in construction.
Kahlon served in the Israel Defense Forces from 1978 to 1986. After his army service, he started a business. He later studied political science at the University of Haifa. He also earned a law degree from the Netanya Academic College. In 2013, he attended a special management program at Harvard University.
Political Journey
Kahlon became involved in politics in the late 1980s. He first entered the Knesset in the 2003 elections. He was then appointed Deputy Speaker of the Knesset. He kept his seat in the 2006 and 2009 elections. In 2009, he became the Minister of Communications.
Making Cell Phones Cheaper
As Communications Minister, Kahlon led a big change called the "Cellular Revolution." He made policies that allowed new phone companies, like Golan Telecom, to enter the market. This helped lower the prices of cell phone services in Israel a lot. He also worked to reduce electricity costs for families who needed help. In 2011, he became the Minister of Welfare & Social Services.
Starting a New Party
Kahlon took a break from politics and did not run in the 2013 elections. However, he soon decided to return. In 2014, he started a new political party called Kulanu. The word "Kulanu" means "all of us" in Hebrew. He wanted his party to focus on helping ordinary people with economic issues.
In the 2015 elections, Kulanu won ten seats in the Knesset. This was a great success for a new party. Kulanu joined the government, and Kahlon was appointed Minister of Finance. This is a very important role, as it involves managing the country's money. He also briefly served as Minister of Environmental Protection and Minister of the Economy.
Retirement from Politics
In April 2019, Kulanu won 4 seats in the election. The party later joined the Likud party in May 2020. Moshe Kahlon announced that he would be retiring from politics. He officially left his role as Minister of Finance on 17 May 2020.
Life After the Knesset
After leaving politics, Moshe Kahlon started a new chapter. In November 2020, it was announced that he would lead a new investment fund. This fund was created with members of the House of Al Falahi, following an agreement between Israel and the United Arab Emirates.
