The Mothers of Gynecology Monument is a special statue in Montgomery, Alabama. It was created by artist Michelle Browder and was shown to the public on September 24, 2021. This monument honors three brave enslaved women named Anarcha, Betsey, and Lucy. They were important in the history of medicine, even though they faced very difficult times.

The monument is located at 17 Mildred Street, which is close to the National Memorial for Peace and Justice. It stands about 15 feet (4.6 m) tall.

Honoring Important Women

This monument was built to remember and honor Anarcha, Betsey, and Lucy. These women were patients of a doctor named J. Marion Sims in the 1800s. Their experiences helped doctors learn more about women's health. The monument makes sure their contributions are not forgotten.

Who Were Anarcha, Betsey, and Lucy?

Anarcha, Betsey, and Lucy were enslaved women. This meant they were not free and had no control over their lives. They were forced to be patients for medical studies by Dr. J. Marion Sims. His office was located nearby. Their experiences, though difficult, helped advance medical knowledge. The monument helps us remember their strength and the challenges they faced.

What the Statues Are Made Of

The statues of Anarcha, Betsey, and Lucy are made from old, discarded metal objects. Artist Michelle Browder asked people to donate these metal pieces. She chose this material for a special reason. It helps to show how Black women were often treated in the past, like they were not important. But by turning these broken pieces into beautiful art, the monument also shows the strength and beauty that can come from difficult situations. It reminds us that even discarded things can be valuable and beautiful.

Recognition and Support

On February 16, 2022, the Medical Association of the State of Alabama visited the monument. They showed their support for the project and the women it honors. The association gave Michelle Browder a donation of $15,000. This gift helped support the monument and its important message.
