Mount Asphyxia, also known as Mount Curry, is a tall volcano found on Zavodovski Island. This island is the most northern part of the South Sandwich Islands. The volcano reaches about 550 metres (1,800 ft) high.
About Mount Asphyxia
Mount Asphyxia got its name because of the strong, suffocating fumes that come from the volcano. These fumes mix with the smell of penguin guano (bird droppings) on the island. The air can become very hard to breathe for anyone visiting.
These unique qualities have also given names to other places on Zavodovski Island.
Volcanic Eruption in 2016
Mount Asphyxia erupted in March 2016. By July of that year, a large part of the island was covered in ash. About one-third to one-half of the island was affected. This ash put the many penguin colonies living there at risk.
