Mount Astor is a very tall mountain in Antarctica. It stands 3,710 meters (about 12,170 feet) high. This impressive peak is located about 2 miles north of Mount Bowser. Both mountains are part of the Hays Mountains, which are a section of the larger Queen Maud Mountains.
Discovering Mount Astor
First Sighting
Mount Astor was first seen by a famous American explorer. His name was Rear Admiral Richard E. Byrd. He spotted the mountain in November 1929. This happened during an important flight. Byrd was flying towards the South Pole as part of his Byrd Antarctic Expedition.
How it Got its Name
After discovering the mountain, Richard E. Byrd named it. He chose to name it after Vincent Astor. Vincent Astor was a very important person. He had helped pay for Byrd's expedition. This support made the trip possible.
