Kids Encyclopedia Facts

The Hays Mountains are a big group of mountains and peaks in Antarctica. They are part of the Queen Maud Mountains and are located between two large glaciers, the Amundsen Glacier and the Scott Glacier. This mountain range stretches from Mount Thorne in the northwest to Mount Dietz in the southeast.

These mountains were first seen by Rear Admiral Richard E. Byrd during his famous flight over the South Pole on November 28–29, 1929. Later, his team, the Byrd Antarctic Expedition, mapped parts of the area in 1929 and 1934. Admiral Byrd named the mountains after Will H. Hays, who was a very important person in the American movie industry at the time.

Important Mountains

One of the most well-known peaks in the Hays Mountains is Mount Astor. This mountain was also named by Admiral Byrd. He named it after Vincent Astor, who was a wealthy person from the Astor family. Vincent Astor helped fund Byrd's 1929 expedition, which allowed the team to explore and map these amazing mountains.
