Mount Beadell is a mountain located in Western Australia. It stands 527 metres (about 1,729 feet) tall. This mountain is found in a very remote area called the Gibson Desert. It was named after a famous Australian explorer and surveyor, Len Beadell. He was known for building many roads in the Australian outback, including the Gunbarrel Highway.

Mount Beadell is quite far from other places. It is about 155 kilometres (96 miles) west of Jackie Junction. It is also about 295 kilometres (183 miles) east of Carnegie Station. Carnegie Station was the starting point for the western part of the original Gunbarrel Highway.

The Story of Mount Beadell

Finding the Mountain

In May 1958, Len Beadell was working on a big project. He was surveying the land to build the Gunbarrel Highway. During this work, he discovered the mountain that would later be named after him. Len Beadell always looked for high points in the landscape. These high spots were very important for making accurate maps and surveys.

A friend of Beadell's, Bill Johnson, suggested that the mountain should be named in Beadell's honour. Bill had known Len since they were in the army together. The Surveyor General of Western Australia officially agreed to the name in August 1958.

A Special Memorial

In May 1959, an official survey marker and a beacon were placed on top of Mount Beadell. Many years later, on May 12, 1996, a special memorial was put on the mountain. This date was exactly one year after Len Beadell had passed away.

The memorial included a copy of a theodolite and a plaque. A theodolite is a special tool surveyors use to measure angles and distances. About 170 people came to the ceremony to honour Len Beadell and his work.
