Mount Dobson Ski Field (July 2022)

Mount Dobson is a fun ski resort located on the South Island of New Zealand. It's a great place for skiing and snowboarding, especially for those who are already a bit good at it! The resort is close to a town called Tekapo.

What is Mount Dobson?

Mount Dobson is a special place where people go to ski and snowboard. It has different ways to get up the mountain, like a chair lift (which is like a moving bench you sit on) and a T-bar (which pulls you up while you stand on your skis or board). There's also a special tow for beginners, which is perfect for learning.

The resort has 14 different paths, called "trails," that you can ski or snowboard down. These trails cover a big area, about 400 hectares (that's like 1,000 football fields!).

Slopes for Everyone

Mount Dobson is best known for its slopes that are just right for "intermediate" skiers. This means people who are not total beginners but also not super experts. For every one beginner slope, there are two intermediate slopes, and then one advanced slope for the really skilled skiers. So, there's a good mix for different levels!

Where is Mount Dobson?

The ski resort sits in a wide, open area that looks like a big bowl without any trees. It faces towards the southwest, between the towns of Fairlie and Tekapo. This open space gives you amazing views as you ski!

Special Features

Mount Dobson has some cool features for skiers and snowboarders:

  • A natural half pipe: This is a U-shaped snow structure, like a giant ramp, that's perfect for doing tricks and jumps. It's formed naturally by the snow and land.
  • Groomed main trails: The main ski paths are smoothed out and prepared regularly by special machines. This makes the snow perfect for skiing and helps you have a smooth ride.

Staying Near Mount Dobson

Mount Dobson does not have places to stay right at the resort. Most visitors choose to stay in the nearby town of Fairlie. From there, it's an easy trip to the ski field for a day of fun on the slopes.

The Peak

The ski field is named after a mountain peak called Dobson Peak. This peak is very tall, reaching about 2,095 meters (which is over 6,800 feet!) high. It stands just north of the ski resort.

A Bit of History

Mount Dobson ski field was put up for sale on October 22, 2014. It continues to be a popular spot for winter sports enthusiasts.
