Exploring Mount Gunjin
Mount Gunjin has been an important spot for many years. Its high position makes it a great place to see far and wide. This is why it was chosen for different important projects.
A Lookout for Fires
For a long time, Mount Gunjin was home to a special tower. This was a fire-watching tower used by the Western Australian Forestry Department. Its job was to help spot bushfires from a distance. People sometimes called it the Mount Gunjin lookout tower.
Building the Tower
The fire tower and a small hut were built way back in 1921. This information is shared in a guide called the Kattamordo Heritage Trail pamphlet. Imagine how important it was to have eyes on the landscape to protect forests from fires!
A Home for Stargazers?
Before the Perth Observatory was built in Bickley, scientists looked at different places for it. One of the spots they thought about was near Mount Gunjin! They needed a place with clear skies, away from city lights, to study the stars.
Mapping the Land
In 1966, Mount Gunjin became a very important starting point for a big project. This project was called the National Geodetic Survey. It's like drawing a super-accurate map of the whole country. Mount Gunjin was chosen as the first main point in Western Australia for this huge mapping effort.
