History of Mount Hope
Mount Hope was once a village focused on mining iron. This mining was very important, especially during the American Revolutionary War.
Early Iron Mining
People started mining iron in Mount Hope around 1710. This mining continued for a very long time, almost without stopping, until the 1970s.
John Jacob Faesch was a key person in Mount Hope's history. In 1772, he built a stone furnace. This furnace helped turn Mount Hope into a major place for making iron. He managed the iron works until he passed away in 1799.
Growth and Changes
After John Jacob Faesch, different owners and managers ran the furnace. In 1831, a new company called The Mount Hope Mining Company was formed. This happened because the Morris Canal opened. The canal made it much easier to transport iron and other goods.
However, mining stopped for a few years, from 1893 to 1899. This was due to money problems and new, cheaper iron sources from other places.
Later Years and Closure
In 1900, Empire Steel & Iron Company bought the mine and started it up again. Other companies and partnerships continued the mining operations. Finally, the mine closed for good in 1979.
Important Places
The Mount Hope Miners' Church is a special building in the community. It was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 2012. This means it's recognized for its important architecture, its role in social history, and its religious significance.
