Mount Irvine is a small village and a mountain in the beautiful Blue Mountains area of New South Wales, Australia. It's part of the City of Blue Mountains in Greater Western Sydney. In 2021, only 22 people lived there.
The mountain is about 850 meters (2,789 feet) above sea level. It's located about 85 kilometers (53 miles) west-northwest of Sydney's city center. Getting there takes more than two hours by car.
Mount Irvine has a very wet climate, which means it gets a lot of rain. It also has rich, dark soils that came from ancient volcanoes. This special soil and the high rainfall (more than 1,500 mm or 59 inches a year) help a lot of temperate rain forest plants grow. The area is famous for its amazing gardens, much like those in the nearby area of Mount Wilson.
There are only about twenty properties in Mount Irvine. Some of these are small farms that grow walnut and chestnut trees. Most of the farming here uses organic methods, which means they don't use artificial chemicals.
History of Mount Irvine
The road leading to Mount Irvine was first mapped out in 1897 by a government surveyor named Charles Scrivener. Later that same year, he came back with his son, Charles Passevile Scrivener. His son brought two friends who had also studied at Hawkesbury Agricultural College.
The elder Charles Scrivener wanted to make the area a national park. When this idea didn't happen, 400 hectares (about 988 acres) of land were put up for sale. Scrivener's son and his two friends bought the first three pieces of land. Charles Scrivener himself moved to Mount Irvine when he retired in 1915. Their families still live in Mount Irvine today.
