Mount Jefferson, Ohio facts for kids
Mount Jefferson is a small, quiet place in Ohio, United States. It's known as an "unincorporated community." This means it's not a city or town with its own local government. Instead, it's part of a larger area called Loramie Township in Shelby County, Ohio.
You can find Mount Jefferson along State Route 66. It's located south of a place called Houston. Even though it has "Mount" in its name, it's not on top of a mountain! It sits about 961 feet (293 meters) above sea level. It's actually on the southern side of a valley. This valley was created by a small stream called Ninemile Creek. This creek eventually flows into Loramie Creek.
Discovering Mount Jefferson's Story
Mount Jefferson has a simple but interesting history. It was officially planned out on January 12, 1838. A person named Jonathan Counts was the one who created the layout for the community. The land he used belonged to Samuel Farnum.
Early Dreams and Growth
When Mount Jefferson was first planned, people had hopes for it to grow. Three different churches were started there. These included Christian, Episcopal, and Presbyterian churches. However, the community never became very large. Only a few buildings were ever constructed. For example, there was just one store and a small number of houses built in the area.
