What is Mount Kaye Made Of?
The Mount Kaye area is known for its interesting rocks. The mountain range is made of a special type of rock called Noorinbee Granodiorite. This rock is a mix of black and white colors and can be seen on the mountain's slopes and peaks.
Waterfalls and Rivers
Many small streams flow down from the Mount Kaye range. These streams drop about 300 metres (980 ft) (that's like falling from a 100-story building!) in a series of waterfalls and cascades. They eventually reach the Cann River at the bottom of the mountain.
Amazing Plants of Mount Kaye
The area around Mount Kaye and a nearby place called Mount Denmarsh is very important for nature. It has a huge number of rare and special plants. Scientists call this "high biological significance" because so many unique living things are found here.
Rare Plant Species
Some of the rare plants you might find include:
- Long-leaf Bitter pea (Daviesia wyattiana)
- Tasmanian Waxflower (Philotheca virgata)
- Genoa Grevillea (Grevillea parvula)
- Finger Hakea (Hakea dactyloides)
- Rusty Velvet-bush (Lasiopetalum ferrugineum)
- New South Wales Pomaderris (Pomaderris ledifolia)
- Monkey Mint-bush (Prostanthera walteri)
Where Plants Grow
Mount Kaye is also special because it's the furthest north that many plants from Tasmania grow. It's also the furthest south for some plants that usually grow in eastern New South Wales. This makes it a unique meeting point for different plant types. A large area of about 8,100 hectares (20,000 acres) around Mount Kaye is protected as a "Remote and Natural Area." This means it's kept wild and untouched.
Getting to Mount Kaye
Mount Kaye is not an easy place to visit. The closest paved road is the Monaro Highway, which runs about 4 kilometres (2.5 mi) to the west.
Difficult Paths
There are some tracks for four-wheel drive vehicles near Mount Kaye. However, these tracks are often overgrown with plants and have difficult stream crossings. They are mostly used only for emergencies.
Walking to the Peak
If you want to walk to the top of Mount Kaye, you need to be very good at finding your way. It's a physically demanding hike, meaning it's quite hard work!
