This impressive peak is part of the main ridge of the Sentinel Range, a large mountain chain on the icy continent. You can find Mount Ostenso about 3.7 kilometers (2 nautical miles) south of another mountain called Mount Giovinetto.

Mount Ostenso was first mapped by a group of explorers. This group was known as the Marie Byrd Land Traverse Party. They explored the area between 1957 and 1958. Charles R. Bentley led this important expedition.

The mountain was named after Ned A. Ostenso. He was a scientist who studied earthquakes, also known as a seismologist. Ned Ostenso worked at Byrd Station in 1957. He was also a valuable member of the mapping party that discovered the mountain.
