Mount Rat is a place in South Australia that used to be a small community. It's located in an area called Wauraltee, which is on the Yorke Peninsula. You can find it near where the Spencer Highway meets Mount Rat Road. It's about halfway between the towns of Maitland and Minlaton.

A Look Back in Time

Mount Rat was first settled in the 1850s. People started building homes and businesses there. By the year 1882, it had grown into a small but busy place.

What Mount Rat Had

In its early days, Mount Rat was home to several important buildings. It had a school where children learned, a hotel for travelers, and a blacksmith's shop. There was also a chapel for religious services and a large water tank to store water.

The Town Disappears

Over time, fewer people lived in Mount Rat. By 1905, the school had closed its doors. Eventually, most of the buildings were gone. Today, Mount Rat is mostly a quiet, empty area. It's often called a "ghost town" because the community that once lived there has disappeared.

What's Left Today?

Even though the town is mostly gone, you can still find a few things at Mount Rat. There are two water tanks that remain from its past. Also, a modern telecommunications tower stands there today.
