Who Discovered Mount Wade?

The first person to discover Mount Wade was the famous explorer Roald Amundsen. He found this massive mountain way back in 1911. Later, in November 1929, Richard Byrd took pictures of it from his flights. He was exploring the Queen Maud Mountains at the time.

How Mount Wade Got Its Name

Mount Wade was named by a group called US-SCAN. They named it after F. Alton Wade. He was a very important scientist, known as a geologist. Geologists study the Earth's rocks and land.

F. Alton Wade was part of several expeditions to Antarctica:

  • He joined the Byrd Antarctic Expedition from 1933 to 1935.
  • He was a senior scientist for the United States Antarctic Program from 1939 to 1941.
  • He led two groups from Texas Tech University to the Shackleton Glacier area. These trips happened in 1962–63 and 1964–65.
