The Mousehole Wild Bird Hospital and Sanctuary is a special place in Cornwall, England. It is located near the small village of Mousehole. This hospital helps wild birds that are hurt or sick.

About the Mousehole Wild Bird Hospital

The Mousehole Wild Bird Hospital and Sanctuary is dedicated to caring for birds. It helps both land birds and sea birds. The goal is to heal them and release them back into nature.

What the Hospital Does

The hospital takes in all kinds of wild birds. These birds might be injured or unwell. If a bird can't go back to the wild, but is comfortable living with people, it gets a safe home there for life. The staff work every day of the year to care for the birds.

Each year, the hospital treats around 1,000 birds. It also provides a permanent home for about 80 birds. The dedicated team continues the work started by the founders.

A Look at Its History

The hospital was started in 1928 by two sisters, Dorothy and Phyllis Yglesias. Over the years, it became very well-known. It gained special fame during the 1967 Torrey Canyon disaster. During that event, over 8,000 birds covered in oil were brought to the hospital for help.

Facing Challenges: The Bird Flu Outbreak

In 2022, the hospital faced a very difficult challenge. There was an outbreak of bird flu. To stop the disease from spreading, the hospital had to close. Sadly, all the birds under the hospital's care at that time had to be humanely put down. This was a necessary step to protect other birds and prevent the illness from spreading further.
