Discovering the Moyle House and Tower
You can find the Moyle House and Indian Tower at 606 East 770 North in Alpine, Utah. It's on the northeast side of the Moyle Historical Park.
How the House Was Built
The house started as a simple dugout home around 1858. It was made bigger between 1859 and 1860. Later, in 1917, John Moyle's son, Joseph Moyle, expanded the house. He added new design styles, like Bungalow/Craftsman elements. A special underground room, called a dugout or food cellar, was also built around 1858-1860.
The Unique Indian Tower
The tower was built from 1860 to 1866. It was like a private fort! It helped protect the family during the Black Hawk War. This war involved conflicts between settlers and some Native American groups. This tower is special because it's the only one known in Utah built just for one family's protection.
Who Built These Structures?
An English-born builder named John Rowe Moyle built these stone structures. He was also a member of the Mormon faith. His hard work created these important buildings.
A National Historic Place
The Moyle House, the Indian Tower, and the dugout/food cellar are all part of the National Register of Historic Places listing. This listing happened on December 23, 1992. The property covers about 2.5 acres.
