Moytoy of Citico facts for kids

Kids Encyclopedia Facts

Moytoy of Citico was a name given to a Cherokee leader or war chief. He was said to have lived in the area of Virginia during a time of conflict called the Anglo-Cherokee War (1759–1761). However, there is not much proof that he actually existed, or that this was his real name. Historians are still unsure about the details of his life.

Moytoy's Reported Actions

During the French and Indian War in 1758, the British and their Native American allies, including some Cherokee, were fighting against the French. A writer named James P. Brown wrote that Moytoy felt the British had treated his group unfairly. Because of this, Moytoy and his followers supposedly left the fighting.

It is said that Moytoy took several British horses as a way to get back at them. Other Cherokee allies reportedly agreed with Moytoy's feelings about the British. However, two important Cherokee leaders, Attakullakulla and Ostenaco, did not support Moytoy's actions. They likely believed his actions could cause more trouble.
