Mr. Cartoon was a popular TV show for kids that aired for over 30 years! It was shown on WSAZ-TV, a local NBC channel in Huntington, West Virginia. The show had two main hosts during its long run. George Lewis was the host until 1969. Then, Jule Huffman took over as Mr. Cartoon and hosted the show until it ended in May 1995, when he retired.
What Was the Show Like?
The Mr. Cartoon show was a lot of fun for its young audience. It featured many different cartoons that kids loved to watch. The show was filmed with a live studio audience of children.
While the cartoons and commercials were playing, the kids in the audience didn't just sit still. They got to play exciting games off-camera! One popular game was musical chairs. Each day, a special part of the show involved Mr. Cartoon reading a riddle. A child from the audience would then try to guess the answer.
Mr. Cartoon's Legacy
Even after the show ended, its memory lived on. The TV station WSAZ brought back a character named Beeper as a mascot. Beeper was a well-known part of the Mr. Cartoon show. From 2009 to 2013, during the cold winter months, a picture of Beeper would appear on screen. This happened when the station announced school closings or delays due to bad weather.
