The Sweet History of Mr. Whippy
How Mr. Whippy Came to Australia
The original Mr. Whippy company started in the United Kingdom. In 1962, they decided to bring their delicious ice cream to Australia. They sent ten special ice cream vans all the way from Southampton, UK, to Sydney, Australia, on a ship!
The vans were a big hit, so the next year, in 1963, they sent even more vans – twenty-four of them! Over time, about 200 of these special Commer Karrier vans were brought from the UK to Australia.
Changes Over the Years
The Mr. Whippy franchise continued to operate in Australia until the mid-1970s. After that, the company sold its fleet of ice cream vans to different private owners. This meant that individual people or small businesses could still operate Mr. Whippy vans.
In 1982, the name "Mr Whippy" was officially registered as a trademark in Australia. A trademark protects a brand's name and logo, so no one else can use it without permission. This was done by a company called Mr Whippy Pty Ltd.
Later, in 2000, a company called the Franchised Food Company bought Mr Whippy Pty Ltd. At that time, Mr. Whippy had 30 ice cream shops along Australia's east coast.
More recently, in 2019, the Dib Group bought the Mr. Whippy company. They had exciting plans to make Mr. Whippy even bigger! They wanted to sell Mr. Whippy treats at Metro Petroleum gas stations. They also planned to introduce new products like Mr. Whippy Thick shakes and Slush drinks.
