The Story of Mr. Whippy in Australia
Starting the Sweet Journey
The first Mr. Whippy company began in the United Kingdom. In 1962, they decided to bring their ice cream business to Australia. They sent ten special ice cream vans on a ship from Southampton to Sydney.
This idea was very successful! Because of this, they sent another twenty-four vans the very next year. These vans were mostly Commer Karrier models. About 200 of these vans came from the UK to Australia.
Changes Over Time
The Mr. Whippy franchise continued in Australia until the mid-1970s. After that, the ice cream vans were sold to different private owners. These owners continued to sell ice cream.
In 1982, the name "Mr Whippy" was officially registered in Australia. This was done by an ice cream company called Mr Whippy Pty Ltd.
New Owners and Expansion
In the year 2000, a company called Franchised Food Company bought Mr Whippy Pty Ltd. At that time, Mr. Whippy had 30 ice cream shops along Australia's east coast.
Later, in 2019, the Dib Group bought the company. They have plans to make Mr. Whippy even bigger. They want to sell Mr. Whippy Thick shakes and Slush drinks at Metro Petroleum locations.
