The Story of Mr. Whippy
How It Began
The first Mr. Whippy ice cream vans started in the United Kingdom. In the 1960s, the company decided to expand. They sent 24 ice cream vans all the way to New Zealand. This was the start of Mr. Whippy in New Zealand.
Growing Bigger
Today, Mr. Whippy is still very popular. As of August 2020, there are about 36 different Mr. Whippy owners. These owners operate a total of 58 ice cream vans across New Zealand.
Changes Over Time
Over the years, Mr. Whippy New Zealand has seen some changes. In the early 1980s, a company called General Foods Limited took over the main rights for Mr. Whippy. This company later became known as Tip Top.
New Vans and Colours
The ice cream vans also changed. The Isuzu Elf became the standard Mr. Whippy van. The vans' colours changed too. They went from pink and white to a bright orange and white design.
New Owners and Ice Cream
In the early 2000s, Tip Top sold the main Mr. Whippy business. It was bought by Peter Woodhams, who was already a Mr. Whippy owner in Waikato. Then, in 2006, a company called Flying Kiwi Holdings bought the business. This company is owned by Nick Cairns, Scot, and Geliana Graham.
The vans became more modern. Newer models like the Ford Transit and Fiat Ducato were used. Even the ice cream mix changed! The Tatua company started making the special UHT ice cream mix. Before that, Fonterra Brands NZ made it.
