The Story of Mrs. Fisher's Chips
How It All Began
The idea for Mrs. Fisher's potato chips came from Eugene Fisher. He was Ethel Fisher's husband. Eugene and Ethel started cooking chips to earn extra money. This was during a tough time called The Depression. Many people needed to find ways to make money then.
The company's logo was created by Eugene in its first year. It shows a fun 'potato-man' wearing a top hat. He is dancing in a circle with two children. The chip bags also have bright red and yellow stripes. At first, the brand was called "Mr. and Mrs. Fisher's." But Eugene later left the family and the business. So, Ethel Fisher changed the name to just "Mrs. Fisher's."
Who Owned the Company?
Mrs. Fisher's still makes chips in Rockford, Illinois. Ethel Fisher sold the company to Sylvester Hahn in 1949. He was a truck driver. Later, in 1962, employees Anthony Marsili and his brother Mario bought the business.
After that, Chuck, Pete, and Paul DiVenti owned the company for 29 years. Today, Roma and Mark Hailman own Mrs. Fisher's. They used to work for the company. They bought it in 2007. Mrs. Fisher's has always been a local company. You can find their chips in northern Illinois and southern Wisconsin.
What Chips Do They Make?
Mrs. Fisher's makes several kinds of potato chips. These include regular, rippled, BBQ, and BBQ rippled. They also make French Onion and dark chips. The dark chips are made from a different type of potato.
The company sells about 600,000 pounds of chips each year. That's a lot of chips! Mrs. Fisher's also makes other snacks. They produce caramel corn, nuts, and more under different names.
Rules for Making Chips
In 2017, Mrs. Fisher's had to change their chip recipe. The U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) made a new rule. This rule banned certain oils called partially hydrogenated oils.
Since this rule, Mrs. Fisher's has been changing their recipe. Some customers have noticed a difference in the taste. The company says this is the third time in its history that an FDA rule has made them change their recipe.
