Kids Encyclopedia Facts

Much Hadham House is a large, historic country house located next to the church in Much Hadham, Hertfordshire, England. For a long time, it was owned by the Bishops of London, who are important leaders in the church. This house is a very special building, officially recognized as a Grade II* listed site, meaning it's historically important.

A Look Back at Much Hadham House's Past

Much Hadham House has a long and interesting history, going back almost a thousand years. It was first built to be a home for the Bishops of London even before the Norman conquest of England in 1066. This was a huge event when William the Conqueror took over England.

Royal Connections and Births

Later, in the 1400s, the house became home to Owen Tudor and his wife, Catherine of Valois. Catherine was a French princess and the widow of King Henry V. Their son, Edmund, was born here around 1430. Edmund later became the father of King Henry VII, who started the famous Tudor royal family!

Changes Through the Centuries

The house you see today was mostly built in the early 1500s. During the English Civil War in 1647, a time when there was fighting between the King and Parliament, the house was taken away from the Bishops. But after the war, when the King returned to power in 1660 during the Restoration of the Monarchy, the house was given back to the Bishop of London.

In 1817, Much Hadham House was used as a place for people needing help with their mental health. This continued until 1868, when it was returned to the Ecclesiastical Commissioners, a group that manages church property.

Modern Life for the Historic House

The house was sold as a private home in 1888. After World War II, a famous person named Major Sir Edward Beddington-Behrens lived there. Today, this grand old house has been divided into three separate homes: Palace House, Palace East, and Palace West. All three are now owned by private families.
