Larry "Mud" Morganfield is an American blues singer, born on September 27, 1954. He is famous for being the oldest son of the legendary blues musician Muddy Waters. His half-brother is also a musician, Big Bill Morganfield.
Growing Up: Mud Morganfield's Early Life
Mud Morganfield was born in Chicago. His parents were McKinley Morganfield, also known as Muddy Waters, and Mildred Williams. He grew up mainly with his mother and seven uncles.
Muddy Waters visited sometimes, but Mud Morganfield did not get to know his father very well. He remembers his childhood in Chicago as a tough but important time. He says these experiences helped shape him into the person he is today.
Even though music was always around him, Mud Morganfield did not think about becoming a professional musician for a long time. He only started considering it after his father passed away in 1983. Before that, he worked as a truck driver.
Driving trucks was very tiring for him. He often dreamed of his father, Muddy Waters, performing on stage. These dreams encouraged him to start playing the blues professionally.
Mud Morganfield's Music Career
Mud Morganfield's voice sounds a lot like his father's. He says this similarity can be both good and bad. You can really hear it on his album For Pops: A Tribute To Muddy Waters. On this album, he sings many of Muddy Waters's famous songs.
Mud Morganfield began his music journey in blues clubs on the south side of Chicago. He performed a mix of his father's songs and his own original music. He enjoys singing his father's songs to show the world that Muddy Waters's legacy lives on through him.
He is very proud to sing his father's music. He wants everyone to know he is Mud Morganfield, not trying to be Muddy Waters. However, when he is on stage, he feels his father is with him. This feeling means a lot to him as he keeps the music alive.
In May 2015, his album, For Pops: A Tribute To Muddy Waters, won an important award. It received a Blues Music Award for 'Traditional Blues Album'.
